Lighting Designer Position

The Role

The Melbourne office requires a lighting designer to support an established lighting team. The successful candidate will have a passion for lighting and design and one to two years of relevant experience ideally with technical lighting issues, design focused solutions and lighting calculations.

This position supports lighting designers on projects in creating lighting concepts in collaboration with clients, architects and interior designers; selection and specification of lighting equipment; lighting calculations as part of design; site mock ups; and delivery of lighting designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inception and design of creative lighting concepts;
  • Selection and specification of lighting equipment and controls;
  • Performing lighting calculations as part of design;
  • Delivery of designs through to construction phase;
  • Represent the team at internal meetings;
  • Organise events, activities or small internal business projects as required.

Technical Skills and Qualifications

  • Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in a design focused discipline (i.e. lighting design/architecture/interior design/industrial design) or similar area;
  • Ability to hand sketch to communicate design ideas, both with colleagues and clients;
  • Proficiency in software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Autocad, Revit & Rhino;
  • Experience in technical lighting issues and calculations (e.g Dialux, AGI32);
  • Experience in writing technical documentation such as lighting specifications, luminaire schedules, control schedules;
  • Experience with graphical communications software (Photoshop, In-Design);
  • Relevant completed project experience;
  • Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership;
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines – and Arup’s related procedures including OH&S

  • Proficient time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Ensure the quality and accuracy of own work and work of others;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in your area of responsibility (you may be accountable for defined parts of design projects)
  • Effective written communication and report writing skills;
  • Ability to maintain personal effectiveness particularly during periods of higher than normal workload;
  • A positive attitude and desire to excel.
