Let’s #LightUp2015
International Year of Light!

On 20 December 2013, The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).

Applause! Emotion!  As lighting designers on a constant crusade to elevate the status of our chosen profession, we could not have wished for a better gift. However, on closer inspection of the accompanying document  Prospectus – An International Year of Light a rather nasty surprise was revealed. We are not in it; in fact we don’t even exist. The words “lighting designer” or “lighting design” are not mentioned once throughout the entire document; and our most important associations don’t appear in the list of the partners of the event.

Now we have another unique opportunity to make ourselves known and understood, and we must do what we can to take matters into our own hands.  It is not too late! Although there is only a year to 2015, there is still something we can do, as lighting designers, to join IYL 2015.

The Idea

It has been demonstrated clearly through participatory planning, bottom-up initiatives and networking, that if you want something done, you have to be prepared to lead from the front to achieve it. For example, the successes of the Social Light Movement (Light is a Right, Not a Privilege!), or even our Italian campaign I(love)lighting design, disseminated through the simple gift of a pin, that had a great response… Then: “It could work!!”  (cited: Frankestein Junior)

So, we have gained the support of 4 international blogs, and together we trust we can move the lighting design community to ask of the IALD President Barbara Horton, and PLD-A President Herbert Cybulska, as well as any other associations of professionals, that they become the public face of our request:

“ to ensure that 2015 will be also the year of lighting designers.”

Light is science, technology, nature and culture, but in the end this is all only theory without the application of such in projects!

A petition will allow us to make our numbers and our voices known, and to let those in a position of authority who represent out profession, just how many of us really want to take part in such an important event as 2015 IYL!

To President Barbara Horton, FIALD,

To President Herbert Cybulska PLD-A,

To the associations whose aim it is to gain recognition for the role of  lighting designers

To all Lighting Designers

On 20, December 2013, The United Nations (UN) General Assembly 68th Session proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015).

This International Year is the initiative of a large consortium of scientific bodies together with UNESCO, and will bring together many different stakeholders including scientific societies and unions, educational institutions, technology platforms, non-profit organizations and private sector partners.

We are passionate about light and lighting, we share creativity, technological research, knowledge of art and architecture, the continuing education and the dissemination of the culture of light. Yet we are not identified, protected, listened to, or enhanced. We have no politics or trade union representation. Now many of us are in a tight spot to continue or defend our activities.

We are lighting designers.

We demand recognition of the strategic value of our profession especially in the  International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). We ask to meet as soon as possible with the Steering Committee of the IYL 2015 to propose an institutional face, a united front, so that Lighting Designers will have a Year of Light too. We need the commitment of our professional associations to identify initiatives to support them. We need the commitment of professionals to increase participation and contribute to the event.
