Lighting Designer Position @ Ramus

We work with light, producing large-scale light and digital art installations in architecture, entertainment, commercial precincts and civic spaces. Based in Melbourne, we produce works globally. We are seeking an experienced lighting designer to work within our design team to bring extraordinary visions to life.

We are looking for someone with previous experience in architectural lighting design, designing and documenting sophisticated lighting installations. You have a strong combination of artistic skill and technical knowledge, with a keen interest in and an understanding of the latest lighting technologies. You are collaborative and enjoy working in a team environment, while also juggling multiple project deadlines.

We have a strong consideration for the impact design has on people and the community at large, we welcome a designer who is sensitive to and interested in pursuing this approach.


  • Producing sketch design proposals, concept designs and detailed design packages, including CAD plans, fixture specifications and schedules, lighting layouts, cut sheets, lux calculations, photometric analytics, ies calculations and visualisations
  • Produce concept visualisations, including 3D modelling and Photoshop images
  • Prepare prototypes and building mock-ups.
  • Liaise with architects, interior designers, and equipment
  • Attend design and site meetings
  • Contribute creatively and technically to projects throughout the project life-cycle including research where appropriate.


  • Understanding of lighting theory, vision and the art of design
  • Knowledge of physics, optics, electricity, electronics, building codes (as it pertains to lighting levels, dark sky regulations and obtrusive lighting guidelines), sustainable energy sources, construction, control protocols
  • An up-to-date understanding of lighting instruments and the latest lighting technologies and lighting design and control software
  • IT skills must include Microsoft Office, InDesign, Photoshop are a requirement for this role. Knowledge of Rhino and Dialux would be beneficial but not essential.
  • English speaking is a must, Mandarin speaking is a bonus.
