Nosaku is a traditional casting manufacturer, having 100-year history, located in Toyama. “KAGO” series which can be bent by hands, taking advantage of character of tin, a big hit both within and outside Japan with, its beauty and innovative idea. The new headquarters rebuilt in 2017 consists of factory, office and various functions, where visitors enjoy factory tour, workshop, shopping and lunch. NOUSAKU tries not only to make products but also to convey “background” and “spirit” We designed factory lighting to give on impression of innovative factory by using non-factorylike design so that Nousaku brand improver.
10,000 people visited the factory in the first month after the reopening, which was 12 times of the previous year.
For the factory area where is most important part, impressive lighting was designed for visitors in addition to the primary purpose of lighting, which is bright and uniform of craftsmen.
In the factory, a rectangle shaped lighting triply sets afloat above large machines of 10m height at maximum. This design derives from Nousaku product “KAGO” which can be lifted up as a basket.
With taking, product design into lighting design, we focused on giving an impression of innovative factory by using non-factorylike design so that Nousaku brand improved.
while keeping high functionality for craftsmen. For finishing area where craftsmen conduct precise operation, natural light is drawn into the area from high side window in addition to the lighting. For installation of the lighting, conducted lux calculation of existing factory was conducted as well as interviews with craftsmen in advance. Based on this analysis, Lighting was designed to keep appropriate brightness by selecting linear lighting.
Red façade wall represents casting fire, illuminated by high pole spotlight from long distance and it is highlighted as a symbol at night.
At entrance hall, a visible storage of wooden molds which have been used since the day of establishment of Nousaku.6.5m height huge glass-wall make visitors welcome. To illuminate the molds from top to down in flat lux, the wall washers and adjustable downlights were installed. To avoid reflection against the glass wall, the opposite of the space was made even darker to highlight the storage as an art.
