Vivid School program lights up young minds

High school students from across the state learned from the artistic talent behind Sydney’s iconic light festival.

More than 1,000 students and teachers from schools across the state got a behind-the-scenes insight last week as part of a new education program at Vivid Sydney.

Among the artists students spoke with was Bonnie Forsyth, who has contributed to a number of projections at Taronga Zoo and Sydney’s CBD over the past few years.

Vivid Sydney 2019 artists Zara Pasfield, Georgina Buchanan and Hurricane Bestman also joined students.

Discussions led by Vivid Light Walk curator Lucy Keeler focused on how students could access careers in light and technology sculpture, projection art and the importance of collaboration in art.

Many of the students who attended study visual art, technical studies or vocational education and training (VET) entertainment.

A panel titled, Delicate Pixel Work (Girls Putting the ‘A’ in STEAM), examined the gender ratio of artists creating light works for Vivid Sydney – at present only 16.5% of whom are female – and how students can lead the change.

Destination NSW CEO and executive producer – Vivid Sydney Sandra Chipchase said the response to the inaugural Vivid School was inspiring.

“Students were able to ask these artists about their career pathways, the challenges and opportunities and how their involvement with Vivid Sydney has been instrumental in their highly successful careers,” Ms Chipchase said.

The inaugural Vivid School involved groups from schools in Queensland, as well as across metropolitan and regional NSW.

Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the southern hemisphere. Now in its eleventh year, Vivid Sydney will transform the Harbour City into a colourful creative canvas until June 15.
